May Is....

Women Riders Month!!!

Maybe you don't know, I am a motorcyle rider!!!!  Now I am short, 5' 2" and weigh in the 120 lb range, so when you see me the last thing you think of is me on a motorcycle.  For years, I couldn't imagine me anywhere on a motorcycle except for the back (as a passenger with Harley Man driving).  Then one day (5 months before my 50th birthday), I decided I'd take the Riders Edge Course to learn how to ride my own motorcycle.  It was the best thing I ever did...even if I didn't pass the course I'd know more as a passenger.

I was scared and excited to take the course...I wanted to push myself to do something I never thought I could do.  The course was terrific and the instructors so very encouraging to the four women taking the course (the other eight were men)! Well, lo and behold, I passed!!  I've been riding my own motorcycle since April, 2003.  I still consider myself a novice because I ride with others who have 20+ years of riding under their belts.  However, I love riding with them and they make me feel so at ease when we are on the road together.

Did you know women now make up 25% of motorcycle owners/riders??? Yep, 1 in 4 women are out on the road riding their motorcycles.  That percentage continues to grow every year and doesn't include all the women who ride as passengers!  Women riders come from all walks of life: teachers, doctors, nurses, insurance agents, realtors, stay at home moms, business owners, grandmothers, grad students, the list goes on and on!!!!  So the next time you see a motorcycle a woman is probably driving it...so how about giving her a thumbs up because she's "grabbed life by the handlebars"!!!

By the way, here's a video of a woman who recently took the challenge (she reminds me of how I felt when I took that same challenge).  Love all my fellow lady riders!!
