What Would You Recommend?

I bought a DLSR Nikon D3000 last year and I love using it to take photographs of events, trips and people.  However; there are times when it just isn't feasible for me to carry my DLSR due to space or events.  So I'm looking for some recommendations about a really good "point and shoot" digital camera that is easy to carry, takes up little space, provides good color, sharpness and clarity of photographs plus being super easy to use since I am a novice with photography.

My daughters bought me a Kodak EasyShare MD863 8MP Digital Camera several years ago and I've loved using it!!  That camera goes everywhere with me and I've had no problems with it whatsoever.  I'd just like to update at this point.

Please help me out here...what camera would you recommend?  Right now I'm thinking about the new Canon PowerShot ELPH 310 HS Digital Camera but I'm just not sure.  I'd like to hear about your "point and shoot" camera!!! I am by no means a great photographer but I do love taking photographs as a way to capture an event or place especially when we're on a ride with our HOG Chapter.
